The Toronto Vegetarian Food Festival is just around the corner. For those of you who have never been the Toronto Vegetarian Food Fair, it’s like a big party of some of the best of friends, brands and of course, food!
This year we are fortunate enough to have a created a community that will be representing some of the most delicious and nutritious brands of veg-friendly products. These are companies whose products are healthy, environmentally conscious and happen to just taste delicious!
Each one of these companies products will influence and inspire you to make healthier choices in your everyday lifestyle.
The brands that are part of our community are:
You know all about the power of coconut oil… or do you? If not, coconut oil can be used in cooking as it has a high smoke point, in baking as an alternative to many overly refined oils, as a skin moisturizer and as a source for energy before a workout. Coconut oil is composed mainly of medium-chain triglycerides, which means they are used for energy and not stored as fat. Our favourite brand to use is Bali Sun, whose virgin coconut oil that has a smooth, mild coconut flavour, it is made in Thailand and is cold-processed using no harsh chemicals. Bali Sun will be sampling their delicious coconut oil at our booth so make sure you stop by and taste the superior quality of this coconut oil. We will also have their newest product available as well coconut nectar and coconut ambrosia (coconut butter). So come early before it all sells out!
For a long time, the only store-bought version of non-dairy ice cream was soy-based. When coconut ice cream was available to Canadians, well let’s just say we were pretty darn happy. Luna and Larry’s Coconut Bliss is made from coconut-milk and is dairy and soy free! Not to mention all the delicious flavours including Island Vanilla, Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge and Mocha Maca Crunch. If you really want to be convinced, come visit our booth for samples (you’ll be wanting seconds!)
Organic, gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy free and vegan crackers, cookies and snacks? Is this too good to be true? Nope! This is Mary’s Crackers, a fantastic brand with products such as caraway crackers, chocolate chip cookies and Pretzels! We love Mary’s Herb Crackers with hummus and veggie sticks as an afternoon snack. Mary’s is such a great option for those with gluten allergy or sensitivity as the products are so delicious. Come by our booth and go crackers!
The word ‘superfood’ gets thrown around a lot, everything wants to be a super food but Navitas Naturals brand provides true superfoods such as acai powder, raw cacao, golden berries and mesquite powder. This is also a company with ethics! Navitas Naturals believes in a whole foods philosophy (just like we do!) and provide organic products with minimal processing. We love all of their products!
There are a lot of protein powders on the market but Sunwarrior has stolen our hearts. Made from sprouted, whole grain brown rice making it easily digestible and hypoallergenic, so it’s a great option for those with dairy issues. Sunwarrior Vanilla flavour is our fave, it has a delicious flavour with no funny after taste. We love to make protein smoothies with Sunwarrior after our workouts and have noticed that our recovery time is much faster (when compared to other protein powders on the market). We get asked which protein powders are good all the time, no seriously all the time and we tell people “Sunwarrior” and have received lots of positive feedback. Stop by our booth and see what the fuss is all about!
We are suckers for snacks! And we love to pack snacks for trips, hikes or strutting around town but carrying our snacks in plastic bags is not only dangerous (has the plastic baggie ever broken it’s seal and left you with chocolate chips at the bottom of your handbag? It stinks) as well, plastic bags are not good for the environment. That is why we love our Wean Green containers. These little glass tubs will fit perfectly into any bag and have an extra tight seal. We should also mention that they are made from recycled glass and are 5 times more durable than regular glass. They come in a variety of sizes and cute colours too, they are the perfect container for the whole family!
Keep up with us:

Do your best not to buy new packaging and wrapping paper this year. Try to use old gift bags, ribbons, paper and tissue. Or better yet, get creative by using newspapers, magazines, shoe boxes and other cloths or blankets. You can even pack your gift into a RuMe bag! I am sure you can come up with some ideas on your own. As the amount of waste and garbage that is generated from holiday gifts is ridiculous. I know it can be exciting to open a present, (trust me, I love it) but try and think outside of the “gift” box this year!
If you have more ideas to add to my GIFT GUIDE – please share below. I want to make this list as comprehensive as possible.
Thanks for your help!
When you are as immersed in the nutrition and wellness field as I am – it’s hard not to classify yourself as a junkie. Most of the time, it’s for personal pleasure and just plain old keeping up to date with the latest! But more often then not, things are loaded on my plate? (No pun intended). Meaning – because I am in this line of work, people naturally approach me and ask all kinds of questions. Which is great, keeps me on my toes – but sometimes I don’t have the time or all the answers. That is why it is important that people empower themselves and become their own junkies. Find out what’s real and what’s not.
Which is great to a certain extent. We are in at age in society where we have everything we need available at our fingertips. Almost everything can be found online, in a book, magazine or health food store. This can be confusing and overwhelming though, as there is SO MUCH information out there. I’ll admit, it is tough when you are sitting at home by yourself trying to sift through articles, books and web pages…so why not get off your butt and experience your health in real life!
If you have the opportunity to go to a venue where all like-minded individuals and experts in the field come together for a weekend to bring you all of their wellness services, products, specialty foods and more – then why not take advantage. What I am talking about here is the…
It is at Metro Toronto Convention Center (North Building) – there will be a plethora of goodies to choose form, a range of talks, lectures and workshops to attend – and you may just get to experience whole health at first hand in person.
So on November 26, 27 or 28th – come and make it out to the show. I will not have a booth at this show – but I will be there walking around, schmoozing and saying hi to all my like minded “nutrition junkie” friends!
Hope to see you there!
UPDATE: I HOPE YOU MADE IT OUT THIS WEEKEND!
If you didn’t, here is a brief description of what you missed and what you can look forward to the next time you attend. I came on Friday night and again on Sunday. One day is never enough, especially when I have so many people to say hello to and so many goodies to pick up. Some of my favourite people to visit and products to pick up are :
Natural Calm: My good friends Dale and Linda are the perfect team to represent this amazing product line. Natural powdered magnesium, relaxes your body, calm’s your nerves (literally) and makes for a nice elixir before bedtime. Having trouble sleeping and keeping your leg’s still? Then you need a daily dose of magnesium. I should also mention that you can only absorb the calcium in your body with enough magnesium. Dale and Linda are also the people who I went to Africa with in May. A large portion of their proceeds go towards Organics 4 Orphans – and incredible organization that supports communities in Kenya to eat more Greens!
The Fairy’s Tonic: Zoey is miss Kombucha herself. This is one of the tastiest fermented health promoting beverages you will ever drink. Just 1 oz, and your body and mind are buzzing. Sip before or after any meal throughout the day and your body will be very happy!
Vega: For incredible, raw, vegan, plant based supplements – Vega has it all. Bars, shakes, smoothies to go. You don’t need to think twice about getting healthy food in on the go. Vega’s products are so complete and well rounded, loaded with protein, fiber and slow burning carbs you will feel amazing all day long!
Raw Elements: My friends Dawn and Brent are behind this amazing company. They are my supplier for all good things raw from goji berries, probiotics to my favourite protein powder Sun Warrior. Some new friends include:

Nud Fud: With Julia you will get a collection of healthy, organic and even raw bars, chips and cereals. Loaded with whole foods like nuts, seeds, dried fruits and veggies.
Some other Fav’s
I decided to come up with a fun batch this past weekend. I usually make a batch of pancakes that is very simple with just some whole grain flour (like spelt or oats) a banana, some rice milk and a few other things. They are yummy, but not as yummy as this batch.
This weekend I decided to take things a little outside of the Aunt Jamima pancake box (which I don’t think I have ever used in my life) and make some super powered protein pancakes.
Most people don’t think of pancakes as a source of protein. Well that all depends on what you put into it. I have been on this Sun Warrior kick lately (for over a year) since it is my favourite protein powder to use. Along with some high fiber gluten free flours, these pancakes are good for at least a serving or two of your plant based protein for the day. I also added a whole bunch of super foods like mesquite, chia, coconut sugar and then topped them with fresh berries and a homemade cashew cream and date syrup. If this isn’t the perfect way enjoy a meal, then I don’t know what is. They were dense, hearty and had the most unique flavour. You should try them!
There are a whole bunch of ingredients in these pancakes, some of which may be new to you. If you can try to get a hold of some of them at your local health food store for a change.
Mesquite Power Pancakes
½ cup Teff Flour (gluten free, high in protein)
½ cup Buckwheat Flour (gluten free, full of fiber)
½ cup Rolled Oats
1 cup almond or rice milk with 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (makes vegan buttermilk)
1 tablespoon mesquite powder (gives pancakes a malty sweet taste(
1 tablespoon chia powder or ground flax (binds it all together – acts as one egg)
2 tablespoons Sun Warrior Protein (totally optional – but gives them a boost)
1 tablespoon coconut sugar (natural low glycemic sweetener) buy some here!
1 teaspoon cinnamon (balances blood sugar)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
½ cup fresh blueberries (antioxidants)
1 tablespoon coconut oil (energy)
1 tablespoon date syrup or maple syrup (natural sweetness, and PURE fun!)
2 large tablespoon of cashew cream (cashews, almond butter, rice syrup and cinnamon all blended up!)
- mix the dry ingredients
- mix the wet ingredients
- combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mix and let sit for 5 minutes
- warm a hot skillet or pan with some coconut oil
- drop batter onto pan by the ¼ cup full (or bigger) and allow to warm until bubbles come through or one side has browned, flip over (approx 2 minutes per pancake)
Learn how to make your next Smoothie!
It’s official – making smoothies is my favourite way to start the day!
Also, with spring on the horizon, the desire to eat a heavy meal diminishes. So making a daily batch of liquid goodness seems like the perfect plan!
Not only do refreshing smoothies give you energy first thing in the morning – they are also so much fun to make. Everyday I create a new theme in my blender using different flavours and textures – but they all have one thing in common – they are packed full of raw, organic, fruits, vegetables and superfoods!
Making a smoothie is the easiest way to absorb a whole bunch of nutrients all at once. They can be full of fiber and vitamins and depending on what you put into them you can also get your daily dose of protein, antioxidants and healthy fats.
Why not indulge… and drink your next meal? What could be more delicious than a creamy smoothie that fills you up and gives your body the nutrition and vitality that it requires to thrive? There really is no better answer…so let me tell you five simple reasons why you should be making smoothies and blending your way to health!
Time Saver – Smoothies take all of 5 to 10 minutes to make (depending on how prepared you are), can be taken on the go and will last all day in a stainless steel bottle.
Easy to Absorb – Liquids are easier to digest and allow nutrients to absorb into your cells for immediate uptake.
All -in -One – You can get a “whole” lot of goodness into one blender – Vitamins, protein, carbohydrates and fat!
Super Fun– Enjoy the “process” and get creative with colourful ingredients and textures (add granola and eat it with a spoon!)
Liquid Energy – Use superfoods to give you a boost (no booster juice!!!). Make your own blend and enjoy in the morning, afternoon or pre/post work out!
You are in luck because I have provided simple steps on to make the perfect smoothie every day.
How to blend your way to health:
These can be made in any blender (but a Vitamix or BlendTech are highly recommended!).
- Start with 2 cups of liquid – rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk or coconut water
- Choose your protein (2 tbsp. or more)– raw brown rice protein (I like Sun Warrior), hemp protein, hemp hearts or almonds
- Choose your fruit (1/2 – 1 cup of either)– blueberries, raspberries, banana, mango, avocado or dates
- Choose your green (one handful)– spinach, kale, chard, sprouts, cucumber or (1 tsp) greens powder, spirulina or chlorella
- Choose your superfoods – (1 tablespoon of one or more) goji berries, cacao nibs, maca, mesquite, hemp seeds, raw honey, chia seeds or matcha green tea
Have fun and get creative!

Making up a blended batch of smooth and creamy goodness is just the absolute simplest and best way to get whole food nutrition in, extremely fast!
Creating a daily smoothie is an amazing first step in taking charge of your health. It is an easy way to digest a whole slew of vitamins and minerals – along with complex carbohydrates, protein and essential fats all in one shot! Especially if you are pressed for time in the morning, a smoothie to take with you on the go is the best thing you can do for your body and your energy. Just make sure you don’t add too many ingredients or you will be left with a stomach ache and a really high calorie drink!
Smoothies are also a great way to sneak in some green veggies or powders that you may not be inclined to take with water alone – at least with a smoothie you can mask the earthy or bitter flavour (which I happen to like!). This means you can even add a bunch of spinach, collards or kale into your blueberry banana morning smoothie. Go figure! It really is that easy. That way you can at least say that you got your dose of greens in for the day!
So let me help you out and get your started with a few ideas and recipes to get some liquid nutrition running through your body.
It is important to make a smoothie that compliments what you are looking for or what your body needs – if it is a breakfast smoothie you may want just fruits, or maybe add some sheep’s yogurt, soy yogurt or coconut oil, rice milk and honey/agave or if it’s a post workout smoothie – you want a higher protein content from a plant based protein powder such as Vega, Hemp or Sun Warrior (my newly discovered RAW and VEGAN brown rice based powder that is incredibly high in protein – easy to absorb and delicious!).
Or maybe your smoothie is just for a snack in the middle of the afternoon in which case you can use some cacao or carob powder, banana, almond butter, coconut oil and cinnamon to hit that sweet craving and replenish your energy for the rest of the day!
Other than that here are some more ideas to get you started…
All you need is a good blender or if you want to take it to the next level…a Vita Mix – which is the goddess of all blenders. It is a high powered machine that will emulsify all of your ingredients into the perfect blend of whatever you put into it!
So let’s start simple.
First off – make sure you are using high quality organic fruits and vegetables. You can pick anything under the sun that makes you feel good.
Fruits: Banana, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Mango, Pineapple, Coconut, Kiwi, Peaches, Apple, Pear, Grapes, Acai
Vegetables (sometimes it is better to juice your veggies first and use the juice as the base of a smoothie): Carrots, Celery, Kale, Collards, Beets, Spinach – if you want all green you can just use a veggie juice base and add green vegetables, an avocado and spirulina ( I call this the liquid lunch smoothie!)
Protein: Vega, Hemp, Rice Protein , Sun Warrior, Hemp Seeds, Almonds or Almond Butter, Sheep’s Milk Yogurt
Liquid: Filtered water, 100% Fruit juice, Rice milk, Almond milk, Hemp milk, Coconut milk
Sweeteners: Raw Honey, Maple syrup, Coconut Nectar, Yacon Nectar Rice Syrup, Fresh Stevia, Dates or Figs
Healthy Fats: Flax oil, Flaxseeds, Coconut oil, Coconut shreds, Chia seeds, Avocado
So here is a sample recipe to get you started….

2 Cups almond milk
2 scoops sun warrior chocolate protein powder + 1 tsp raw cacao powder (for extra chocolate)
1 tablespoon sunflower lecithin
1 tablespoon almond butter
1 tsp yacon necter (optional)
1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp mesquite, maca or carob
Place all ingredients in blend and blend on high speed for 1 minute. Pour into two glasses and drink immediately!
Berry Blast Smoothie
1 1/2 cup rice milk, or almond milk
1/2 cup frozen blueberries or 1 packet of Acai Pulp
1/2 frozen banana
1 teaspoon raw honey
1 tablespoon sunflower lecithin (optional)
1 scoop of Sun Warrior or Vega Smoothie Infusion
1 tablespoon sprouted chia/flax or goji berries

and if I have some fresh coconuts, I use the water and the meat for excellent flavour, electrolytes, healthy fats
Place all ingredients in blend and blend on high speed for 1-2 minutes. Pour into one or two glasses and drink immediately with a glass straw if preferred!
