Don’t tell Mum…And Get Down with Goji Granola!

A warm breakfast-in-bed sexy treat!

The sweet smell of granola baking in the oven is enough to make anyone  feel happy and hot! Even better – knowing the ingredients in your granola are wholesome, rich, and pure. My favourite kind of granola is nothing  short of one  that is homemade.  Of course, being the month of February, love is  in the air. That being said, something sweet and chocolaty with a hint of red is definitely in store!  With the  range of goodness offered by Mum’s Originals Superfoods, there’s more than enough goodies to choose from to make this steamy batch of  granola.

With the heart in mind this month (and not only for health) I made sure each    ingredient was picked with total love and care!

Oats – Oats are rich in fiber and are excellent for reducing cholesterol and  provide long lasting energy (a perfect way to start the day with your Valentine)

Coconut Sugar – Low glycemic, slow burning and just perfectly sweet. You can’t get much better than this!

Goji Berries – Tender, juicy, red and filled with antioxidants, fiber and protein. The perfect boost!

Cacao (aka chocolate) – Need I say more? Magnesium, calcium and the best source of energy, ahem, and a natural aphrodisiac.

Coconut Oil -  Rich, creamy, and sweet, it makes everything taste delicious. It can be used anywhere on your body too! (Hint, hint)

Banana Powder – Did you know that bananas are full of B vitamins? It helps keep those sex hormones alive!

Hemp Seeds – Shaped like hearts, these little guys loaded with heart healthy omega 3′s and fiber

Sea Salt – We all need a little salt in our diet. It makes the sweet sweeter!

Cinnamon – Sweet, delectable, and spicy cinnamon is great for balancing blood sugar and just makes everything taste good. And it adds a little kick when you need it.

Sweet Loving Granola!

Good Things Come in Some Packages!

On the topic of healthy snacks this week (and just in time for school), it is within my knowledge to show you what is out there. Snacks that you can get your hands on that I approve of. We all need snacks, they are available, but we have a choice to make. If you have a guideline to follow of what to choose, how to choose, then you are taking one step closer to wellness and a healthy body! In a another post you will learn how to make your own snacks at home.

As a general rule, you want to look for whole foods that are packaged. Pure ingredients made from whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruits and natural sweeteners. You should be able to read all of the ingredients on the label (and there shouldn’t be more than 5 unless it is jam-packed super bar) and feel confident that you are putting a good product into your body even though it is packaged!

So here is a my approved guideline for healthy packaged snacks (most of which are in my home):

Bars: Lara Bars, Vega Bars, Pro Bar, Honey Bar, Prana Bar, Organic Food Bar (there are more that aren’t listed here, but hopefully you get the idea)

Rice Cakes with Almond Butter

Homemade Granola Goodness

Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down to a bowl of delicious granola in the morning knowing you made it and that it tasted better than anything you bought in a store….well you can.
You could have come to my Breakfast Cooking Class to learn how, or you could simply find a recipe that suits your needs to make a batch of this golden toasted goodness.
But I will give you some quick tips to get started with.
First of all get yourself some good quality organic whole rolled oats. This will be your basis and substance to the recipe. Use sweeteners such as maple syrup, agave nectar, honey. Oils such as sunflower oil, coconut oil or organic canola oil. Then comes the fun part adding such things as almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, coconut flakes, apricots, raisins, goji berries….whatever you want! It’s yours to enjoy. Just store it in a glass jar and it will keep for a good couple of months.
So really it is that easy to make granola at home. Then you don’t have to worry that it is loaded with trans fats, processed sugars and other preservatives.

Golden Morning Granola

4 cups rolled oats

¼ cup coconut or canola oil

¾ cup pure organic maple syrup

1 tbsp rice milk

1 ½ cup oat bran or quinoa flakes

¾ cups sesame seeds

½ cup sunflower seeds

½ cup pumpkin seeds

1 cup coconut flakes

¼ cup flax seeds

1 cup of chopped almonds

1 tsp sea salt

1 ½ cups raisin, apricots or cranberries

  1. Combine maple syrup, rice milk and coconut oil in a large saucepan and set aside.
  2. Mix remaining ingredients in a large bowl, except raisins, and toss well.
  3. Add the oil maple mixture and stir together really well.
  4. Pour mixture into shallow pan or baking sheet with parchment paper and bake for 15 minutes, stir and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and stir in raisins.
  6. Cool and store in air tight container.
  7. Serve in ½ cup portions and serve with rice or almond milk, or add into a cup of yogurt.
